Career Insights
Read what two of our representatives have to say about their careers as financial representatives.
Myndi Aven was an Assistant/Associate Financial Representative for approximately 20 years before switching gears and becoming a full-time Financial Representative and Director of Training for the Mellinger local network office.
The greatest reward of being a Financial Representative is the ability to control my own destiny. I know that the harder I work the greater my rewards will be. It’s my choice and my choice alone. The career has its challenges, too. For me, the greatest is time management because I have to balance my time between my responsibilities as Director of Training and my client.
Career Advice
This is not a job, it’s a business. It is no different than opening a sporting goods store. If you opened a new store, you would be there first thing in the morning and you’d be the last one out at night. You’d be the owner/manager/cashier/stock boy and everything in between. That’s how it is at the Network. You have to spend a ton of time in the beginning getting your ‘store’ off to a good start. If you’re not willing to put in the time and effort, don’t start. Our company is distinguished from the others because we look at the big picture. We are not about the sale, but about the client. We want to help them recognize their goals and help them realize those goals.
This is an awesome career, especially for women.
Before Robert J. Reese became a Financial, he owned an employee benefits agency.
I chose Northwestern Mutual because of the quality of the company and because it offers the opportunity to work with a network of specialists that opens more doors than I was able to open on my own. After all, we have a 150-year history of doing things the right way to attain and maintain excellence. We don’t have to apologize to anyone for who and what we are.
The greatest reward in this career is the base of relationships that grows over the years. Another great reward is the unlimited compensation based on ability and effort. Getting there meant I had to grow out of a comfort zone I had enjoyed for a lot of years and overcoming call reluctance. But along the way, I learned a lot about my strengths and weaknesses.
What Makes This Career Special
There is a very real sense of family and community among the people I’ve known for up to 30 years. Many of them now have grandchildren. Some have passed on. Some have become close friends. Over time, your heart grows roots that extend far beyond the office, into many homes and businesses. It’s a feeling you have to experience to truly appreciate. It’s a benefit that you can only measure in retrospect.
I compare this career experience to being a student who sees the benefit of investing six to eight years of schooling to attain a professional degree. Be willing to sacrifice for several years for the benefits that this career offers. One benefit for me was attaining my CLU designation. I had actually started it 10 years earlier and stopped after three courses. I resumed my studies when I came to the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. I look forward to developing better habits that will put me in a healthy work rhythm.
